The operating system of a computer is its most important component, as it runs all of the software. In fact, because of its importance, an operating system can dictate which computer someone buys. There are three major types of operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and open source software distributions like Linux. Choosing between the three is a process of not only evaluating each product, but also the user.
Uses
A user should start thinking about what tasks they will generally be using the computer for. Most user’s first experiences are on a PC with Windows, so if they are interested in using a computer for basic operations, then they should choose what they know i.e. windows. Open source operating systems, on the other hand, are typically for more advanced users that have experience working with computer code or programming. However there are open source applications that are similar to Windows applications and one may use them while using any operating system. For example open office by openoffice.org is similar in features and functionality to that of Microsoft Office.
There is also a work related difference. Someone in the creative field is better off with a Mac operating system with its sleek interface and artistic capabilities. Meanwhile, Windows is more business oriented in its features.
Security
Mac operating software is considered the most secure. When using an Apple computer, one will notice the lack of antivirus software and other malware detectors because security is a high priority in its design. Windows users usually have to install separate software to combat security issues. Open source systems can be lax in the security area as well, but support communities are available that provide valuable solutions.
Performance and Compatibility
Each operating system can preform admirably in the daily tasks of an average user. Where they differ most is compatibility with other software. Creative software is best suited with Macs, while classic office software isn’t. Open source operating systems usually run only other open source software.
